How this is calculated

The date comes from the clock on your device, so it is the date where you are. Before the page has loaded, it shows the date in New York (Eastern Time). Pick any other date in the box to see the same facts for it.

January 1 is day 1 of the year. October 22, 2026 is day 295 of 365, which leaves 70 days after it, so New Year's Day 2027 is 71 days away. A leap year has 366 days: every year divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100 that are not divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year, 2100 will not be, and the next one is 2028.

Week numbers

Two ways of numbering weeks are common. ISO 8601, the international standard that is also the usual week count in Europe, starts each week on Monday, and week 1 is the week with the year's first Thursday. So the days around New Year can belong to the neighboring year: Friday, January 1, 2027 is in week 53 of 2026. The U.S. count, which is also the default of the WEEKNUM function in Excel, starts weeks on Sunday, and week 1 is the week that contains January 1. The two numbers are often the same and can differ by one.

Date formats and quarters

In the U.S. the date is written month/day/year (10/22/2026); most other countries write day/month/year (22/10/2026). ISO 8601 writes year-month-day (2026-10-22), which cannot be mixed up and sorts correctly. Calendar quarters are three months each: Q1 is January to March, Q2 April to June, Q3 July to September and Q4 October to December. A company's fiscal year can start in another month.

Federal holidays

The next holiday comes from the eleven federal holidays in 5 U.S.C. § 6103. When one falls on a Saturday, federal employees have the Friday before off; when it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after. Banks, schools, state offices and private employers can follow their own schedules.

What week number is it?

It depends on the count. ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday, and week 1 has the year's first Thursday; U.S. weeks start on Sunday, and week 1 has January 1. Both are shown above. October 22, 2026 is in week 43 in both counts.
