GPA Calculator
Enter your letter grades and credits to get your GPA on the 4.0 scale, weighted for Honors, AP and IB classes if you take them, and your cumulative GPA.
One row per class with a letter grade. Credits are the class's credit hours (often 3 or 4 in college; 1 for a full-year high school class, 0.5 for a semester). Pass/fail classes do not count toward a GPA.

| Class | Points |
|---|---|
| English 11: A−3.7 points × 1 credit | 3.70 |
| AP U.S. History: B+3.3 points × 1 credit | 3.30 |
| Algebra 2: B3.0 points × 1 credit | 3.00 |

How this is calculated
Each letter grade is worth grade points on the 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0. At schools with plus and minus grades, a plus adds 0.3 and a minus takes away 0.3, so B+ = 3.3 and B− = 2.7. Multiply each class's points by its credits to get its quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credits.
With the starting values, English 11 A− (3.7), AP U.S. History B+ (3.3), Algebra 2 B (3.0) and Chemistry A (4.0), one credit each, make 14 quality points ÷ 4 credits = 3.50. Credits make bigger classes count more: an A in a 3-credit class and a C in a 1-credit class give (12 + 2) ÷ 4 = 3.50.
Weighted GPA
A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes, so it can go above 4.0. There is no national rule; each school sets its own bonus. This calculator starts with +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB and college classes and gives no bonus to a D or F; change them under “Your school's scale”. In the example, English 11 as an Honors class (3.7 + 0.5) and AP U.S. History (3.3 + 1.0) make 15.5 points ÷ 4 = 3.875, shown as 3.88.
The University of California, for example, adds one point for each semester of an approved honors-level class (AP, IB Higher Level and college courses), none for a D or F, and limits how many extra points count for admission. Colleges may recalculate your GPA their own way, with or without the bonus.
Cumulative GPA
Multiply your GPA so far by the credits it covers, add this term's quality points, and divide by all the credits together. A 3.20 GPA over 30 credits is 96 quality points; 15 new credits at 3.50 add 52.5, so the cumulative GPA is 148.5 ÷ 45 = 3.30.
Grade points by letter
| Grade | 4.0 scale | A+ = 4.3 | No plus/minus |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | 4.3 | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 | 3.7 | 4.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 3.3 | 3.0 |
| B | 3.0 | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| B− | 2.7 | 2.7 | 3.0 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 2.3 | 2.0 |
| C | 2.0 | 2.0 | 2.0 |
| C− | 1.7 | 1.7 | 2.0 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 1.3 | 1.0 |
| D | 1.0 | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| D− | 0.7 | 0.7 | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
The 4.0 column is the scale UC Berkeley publishes; Stanford counts an A+ as 4.3; the College Board's general guide and UC admissions use whole letters only. Your school's handbook decides. Which percent earns which letter is also set by the school; to work out a class grade from percentages first, use the grade calculator.
Classes graded pass/fail, incomplete or withdrawn have no grade points and are left out (choose “No grade”). An F does count: it adds credits but no points, which lowers the GPA. The result is rounded to two decimals. Some schools cut off instead: UC counts 3.875 as 3.87, not 3.88.

Questions people ask
How do I calculate my GPA?
Turn each grade into points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), multiply by the class's credits, add everything up and divide by the total credits. An A in a 3-credit class and a C in a 1-credit class give (12 + 2) ÷ 4 = 3.50.
What is the difference between a weighted and an unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA counts every class on the same 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for Honors, AP or IB classes, such as 0.5 or 1.0, so it can be higher than 4.0.
What GPA is a B average?
3.0 on the 4.0 scale. A B+ average is 3.3 and an A− average is 3.7, at schools that count plus and minus grades.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Multiply your old GPA by its credits, add the new quality points, and divide by all credits. 3.20 over 30 credits plus 15 credits at 3.50: (96 + 52.5) ÷ 45 = 3.30.
Does an A+ count as 4.3?
At some schools. Stanford uses a 4.3 scale with A+ = 4.3, while UC Berkeley counts an A+ as 4.0, the same as an A. You can set either under “Your school's scale”.
How many grade points is a C+?
2.3 on the 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, or 2.0 at schools that ignore pluses and minuses.
