Cubic Yard Calculator
Enter length, width and depth to get cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters for soil, fill, mulch or gravel. Below it, convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
In feet. For 10 ft 6 in, enter 10.5.
In inches. For 1 foot, enter 12; for 2 ft 6 in, enter 30.
For 3 beds of the same size, enter 3.
Enter a percent to add extra. 0 gives the exact volume.
Volume
1.48 cubic yards
That is 40 cubic feet, or 1.13 cubic meters. Ordering by the yard? Round up to 1.5 cubic yards, which leaves a little to spare.
| One area: 12 ft × 10 ft | 120 sq ft |
|---|---|
| Volume: × 4 in deep (÷ 12 = 0.3333 ft) | 40 ft³ |
| ÷ 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard | 1.48 yd³ |
| In cubic meters (× 0.7646) | 1.13 m³ |
Convert cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic meters
54 cubic feet is
2 cubic yards
or 1.5291 cubic meters.
| Cubic feet | 54 |
|---|---|
| Cubic yards (cubic feet ÷ 27) | 2 |
| Cubic meters (cubic yards × 0.764555) | 1.5291 |
How this is calculated
Volume is length × width × depth, with every size in feet. Depth is usually measured in inches, so it is divided by 12. An area 12 ft long and 10 ft wide, 4 inches deep, holds 12 × 10 × 4 ÷ 12 = 40 cubic feet. A cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet, so that is 40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 cubic yards.
A round area uses the area of a circle, π × (diameter ÷ 2)². A round bed 8 feet across has 3.1416 × 4² = 50.27 square feet; 4 inches deep, that is 16.76 cubic feet, or 0.62 cubic yards.
How far a cubic yard goes
| Depth | One cubic yard covers | Cubic yards for 100 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 324 sq ft | 0.31 |
| 2 in | 162 sq ft | 0.62 |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft | 0.93 |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft | 1.23 |
| 6 in | 54 sq ft | 1.85 |
| 12 in | 27 sq ft | 3.7 |
Every row is the same 27 cubic feet, spread thinner or thicker: 324 square feet 1 inch deep, 108 square feet 3 inches deep. In bags, a cubic yard is 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet, so 14 whole bags.

| 27 | 1 |
| 50 | 1.85 |
| 54 | 2 |
| 81 | 3 |
| 100 | 3.7 |
| 135 | 5 |

One cubic yard is exactly 0.764554857984 cubic meters (NIST Handbook 44), and one cubic meter is about 1.308 cubic yards. If you order by the yard, the calculator also shows the amount rounded up to the next half yard, so a little is left over. Use the extra field for material that settles, such as fill or soil.

Questions people ask
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
27. A cubic yard is a cube 3 feet on each side, and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27.
How do I convert cubic feet to cubic yards?
Divide by 27. 54 cubic feet is 2 cubic yards, and 100 cubic feet is 3.70 cubic yards.
How do I calculate cubic yards?
Multiply length × width × depth, all in feet, and divide by 27. An area 12 × 10 ft and 4 inches deep is 12 × 10 × 0.333 = 40 cubic feet, or 1.48 cubic yards.
How much area does a cubic yard cover?
324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 108 square feet at 3 inches, and 81 square feet at 4 inches.
How many cubic meters are in a cubic yard?
0.7646 cubic meters; exactly 0.764554857984 according to NIST. One cubic meter is 1.308 cubic yards.
How many 2 cubic foot bags make a cubic yard?
13.5, so 14 bags, because a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. With 3 cubic foot bags it takes 9, and with 1.5 cubic foot bags 18.
