How this is calculated

Adding tax: tax = price × rate, total = price + tax. $100.00 at 8.25% is $8.25 in tax and $108.25 in all.

Taking tax out: price = total ÷ (1 + rate). A receipt total of $54.13 at 8.25% means a price of $50.00 and $4.13 in tax. Subtracting 8.25% of the total would be wrong, because the tax was figured on the smaller price.

Which rate? The rate you pay is the state rate plus any county, city or district rates where the sale happens. Picking a state fills in the state rate; if your state lets local governments add their own, enter your full local rate instead. The calculator links a rate lookup for the state where there is one. It rounds the tax to the cent; a store that taxes item by item can end up a cent different.

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, although some places in Alaska and Montana charge a local one. Hawaii, New Mexico and Arizona tax the seller's receipts instead of the sale; stores usually pass it on. Hawaii's 4% is a general excise tax on the seller; with the 0.5% county surcharge, stores may pass on up to 4.712%. Utah's state rate is 4.85%, but every place adds a local share, so the calculator starts Utah at 6.1%.
