How this is calculated
Hours worked = end time − start time − unpaid break. Example: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 h 30 min. Minus a 30-minute lunch break that is 8 h 00 min, or 8.00 in decimal hours. At $18.50 an hour the shift pays $148.00 before taxes.
When the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift ran past midnight and 24 hours are added to the end. 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is 6:30 + 24:00 − 22:00 = 8 h 30 min; with a 30-minute break, 8 h 00 min. If start and end are the same time, it counts as a full 24-hour shift.
Decimal hours are the minutes divided by 60, which is what most time sheets and payroll systems want. 8 hours 20 minutes is 8 + 20 ÷ 60 = 8.33 hours. Pay here is counted by the exact minute; an employer that rounds punches, for example to the nearest quarter hour, can come out a few cents different.

Only unpaid breaks belong in the break box. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, short rest breaks, usually 20 minutes or less, count as hours worked. A meal break, typically 30 minutes or more, is unpaid only if you are fully relieved from duty (U.S. Department of Labor, Fact Sheet #22).
The times are clock times. On the two nights a year when the clocks change for daylight saving time, an overnight shift lasts one hour more or less in real time than the clock difference shown here.
