Privacy
The short version: we count which calculators get used and how, so we can make them better. We don't know who you are, and the numbers you type stay out of our records.
What we measure
When you use the site, our own server receives a small record for each of these moments:
- Page views: which page, the size of your browser window, your browser language, and the website that sent you here (just its name, not the full address).
- Calculator runs: which calculator ran and the options you picked, such as filing status, state, or a number of days. Dollar results are recorded only as a rough range, such as “$500 to $999”. We never record the exact amounts you type in.
- Taps and scrolling: what got tapped, how far you scrolled, which parts of a page came into view, and taps that did nothing, so we can find broken buttons.
- Device class: phone, tablet or desktop, worked out from screen width and whether you have a touchscreen. Not the model, not an ID.
- Country: the country your visit comes from, as our hosting provider reports it. We never receive or store your IP address.
Each record is deleted automatically after 90 days. After that we keep only daily totals, such as how many times a calculator ran on a given day, which can't be traced back to any one visit. Automated browsers and crawlers are filtered out and not recorded.
How we tell one visit from another
We set no cookies. Your browser keeps a random visit ID and a page counter in its tab memory while that tab is open, so we can see that a page view and a calculator run belong to the same visit. When you close the tab, they are gone. They are not tied to your name, email or device, and a new tab gets a new ID.
We don't use fingerprinting, advertising IDs or cross-site tracking of any kind.
What you type into the calculators
Almost every calculator runs entirely in your browser; your numbers never leave your device. Two features need our server. The Snow Day Calculator sends the ZIP code you enter to our server, which asks the National Weather Service for the forecast at that place and returns it; the ZIP code is not stored on our server. Your browser remembers it locally so the next visit can show your forecast right away, and you can clear it with your browser's site data. The scholarship calculator loads the income limits for the state you pick from our own site.
Who else sees anything
The site is hosted by Vercel, and our measurement database runs on Cloudflare's servers. Fonts are served from our own site, so loading a page doesn't contact a font provider. Nobody else receives the measurements, and we don't sell or share them.
We plan to pay for the site with advertising. When ads arrive, this page will change first and say which partner is involved and how to opt out of personalized ads. Until it says so, there are none.
If you write to us
A message sent through the contact form is stored in the same database with the page it is about and, only if you give one, your email address so we can reply. We use it to answer and to fix the page, and delete it once it is handled, at the latest after 12 months.
Questions
If anything here is unclear, or you think we measure something we shouldn't, write to us. A person reads it.
