What changes

January 1, 2027 is 71 days from today.

The Saver's Match

The Saver's Credit becomes a federal match: 50% of up to $2,000 you put into a retirement account, paid into that account, for people with modest incomes. The law is 26 U.S.C. § 6433 (SECURE 2.0 Act). The IRS has described how it expects to run it in Notice 2026-48; final rules and the claim form are not out yet.

Medicaid work requirements

Adults in the Medicaid expansion group will need 80 hours a month of work, school, training or community service, or monthly earnings of at least 80 times the federal minimum wage ($580), unless an exemption applies. States must start no later than January 1, 2027; some started earlier, and a state that shows good-faith effort can get more time, up to December 31, 2028. The law is section 71119 of Public Law 119-21, with an interim final rule from CMS.

The federal scholarship tax credit

Donors can get a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for giving to a scholarship organization, and families in participating states can receive scholarships for school costs. The law is 26 U.S.C. § 25F; the Treasury published proposed and temporary rules in October 2026. States decide whether to take part.
