How this is calculated

An acre is exactly 43,560 square feet (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C). To turn square feet into acres, divide by 43,560; to turn acres into square feet, multiply by 43,560. A 10,000 square foot lot is 10,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.2296 acres, a little under a quarter acre (10,890 square feet).

For a rectangular lot, multiply the two sides first. A lot 100 feet by 200 feet is 20,000 square feet, and 20,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.4591 acres. For a lot of another shape, work out its area with the square footage calculator and convert the result here.

How big an acre is

An acre has no set shape. As a square, each side would be about 208.71 feet, the square root of 43,560. It is also 4,840 square yards, and 640 acres make a square mile. In metric units an acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters, or about 0.4047 hectares.

The acre since 2023

Until the end of 2022, land in the United States could be measured with the U.S. survey foot, which is a hair longer than the ordinary foot. NIST retired it after December 31, 2022, except for historic and legacy uses. The acre is still 43,560 square feet, now in the ordinary (international) foot. The old survey acre was 4,046.8726 square meters, about 0.17 square feet larger, which makes no practical difference for a lot.

A quarter acre is 10,890 square feet and a half acre is 21,780 square feet. A third of an acre is 14,520 square feet.

How big is an acre?

As a square, about 208.71 feet on each side. Any shape with 43,560 square feet is an acre, for example 100 × 435.6 feet.

How many acres is a 100 by 200 lot?

100 × 200 feet is 20,000 square feet, which is 0.4591 acres, a little under half an acre.

Did the acre change in 2023?

Barely. NIST retired the U.S. survey foot after December 31, 2022, so the acre is now 4,046.8564224 square meters. The old survey acre was about 0.17 square feet larger.
