Grade Calculator
Add your grades and what each one counts for to get your weighted average and letter grade. Leave a grade empty to see where you stand so far.
Grade = points earned as a percent (45 of 50 points is 90). Weight = how much it counts toward the course grade, from your syllabus. Leave every weight empty to average the grades equally.
Your grade so far
84.46% · B
B on the common US scale with plus and minus grades. This covers the 65% of the course that has a grade.
| Homework: 92% × 20% | 18.4 |
|---|---|
| Quizzes: 85% × 20% | 17 |
| Midterm exam: 78% × 25% | 19.5 |
| Points earned | 54.9 |
| ÷ weight graded so far (65%) | 84.46% |
How this is calculated
A weighted average multiplies each grade by its weight, adds those up and divides by the total weight. Grades that count more move the result more.
Example with the starting values: homework 92% (weight 20%), quizzes 85% (20%) and the midterm 78% (25%) give 18.4 + 17 + 19.5 = 54.9 points out of the 65 that are graded so far. 54.9 ÷ 65 = 84.46%, a B. The final exam (35%) has no grade yet, so this is your grade so far, and the final grade calculator shows what you need on it.
The weights do not have to add up to 100. If your class counts points, such as a 50-point quiz and a 200-point exam, enter the points possible as the weight and your score as a percent. Leave every weight empty and each grade counts the same, which is a plain average.
Letter grades
The letter uses a common US scale with plus and minus grades, shown below. Schools and teachers set their own scales: the cutoffs, whether there are plus and minus grades and how grades are rounded can all differ, and your syllabus or school handbook decides. The calculator does not round, so 89.9% shows as a B+.
| Letter | Percent |
|---|---|
| A+ | 97% and up |
| A | 93% to under 97% |
| A− | 90% to under 93% |
| B+ | 87% to under 90% |
| B | 83% to under 87% |
| B− | 80% to under 83% |
| C+ | 77% to under 80% |
| C | 73% to under 77% |
| C− | 70% to under 73% |
| D+ | 67% to under 70% |
| D | 63% to under 67% |
| D− | 60% to under 63% |
| F | under 60% |
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results and divide by the sum of the weights. 90% weighted 40% and 80% weighted 60% gives (36 + 48) ÷ 100 = 84%.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
Divide by the weights you have. If only 65% of the course is graded, the result is your grade on that 65%, your grade so far.
How do I turn points into a percent?
Divide the points you earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. 172 of 200 points is 86%.
What letter grade is 85%?
A B on the common US scale, which runs from 83% to under 87%. Your school's scale may differ.
What is the difference between a weighted and an unweighted average?
An unweighted average counts every grade the same. A weighted one counts some more than others: an exam worth 30% moves your grade three times as much as a quiz worth 10%.
