How this is calculated
Each die is a random whole number from 1 to its number of sides, drawn with your browser's crypto.getRandomValues and without modulo bias, so every face is exactly as likely as the others. The random number generator page explains how. The total is the sum of the dice plus the modifier. Dice notation writes this as 2d6+3: two six-sided dice, plus 3.
The chance of each total
The table under the result is exact, not simulated. With two six-sided dice there are 6 × 6 = 36 equally likely ways for the dice to land. Six of them add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1), so a 7 has a 6 in 36 chance, 16.67%. The calculator builds the table one die at a time in the same way.
| Total | Ways out of 36 | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 2.78% |
| 3 | 2 | 5.56% |
| 4 | 3 | 8.33% |
| 5 | 4 | 11.11% |
| 6 | 5 | 13.89% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.67% |
| 8 | 5 | 13.89% |
| 9 | 4 | 11.11% |
| 10 | 3 | 8.33% |
| 11 | 2 | 5.56% |
| 12 | 1 | 2.78% |
The average total is the number of dice × (sides + 1) ÷ 2, plus the modifier: 3.5 for one d6, 7 for 2d6, 10.5 for a d20. More dice make the middle totals more likely. Three six-sided dice land on 10 or 11 a quarter of the time, but on 3 only 1 time in 216.
Questions people ask
What are the odds of rolling a 7 with two dice?
6 in 36, which is 1 in 6 or 16.67%. Seven is the most likely total with two six-sided dice.
What is the average roll of a d20?
10.5. Each side from 1 to 20 has a 1 in 20 (5%) chance, so the average is (1 + 20) ÷ 2.
What does 3d6 mean?
Roll three six-sided dice and add them up. The total runs from 3 to 18 and averages 10.5.
What is a d100?
A die with results from 1 to 100, often rolled as two ten-sided dice, one for the tens and one for the ones. Here it is a single fair draw from 1 to 100.
Are these dice fair?
Yes. Each face is drawn from your browser's cryptographic random generator, with uneven values rejected, so every face of every die is exactly as likely as the others.
